Schools, Get Rid Of Textbooks

Say what?!?!

Yup. I said it.

I think schools should get rid of text books.

Gone.

Adios.

Hasta la bye-bye.

Seriously.

I mean, let’s be honest, the way the first week of the new presidency has gone, if we project out a couple years, I could see some government mandated book burning anyways. But that is neither here nor there.

Whether or not we HAVE to get rid of textbooks, we SHOULD get rid of textbooks.

To be more specific, we should get rid of all textbooks, but only in high school.

The Elimination Of High School Textbooks

Before I get in to the disgusting numbers, let’s start with some practicality.

Because of phones and the internet, we will never need to remember facts again.

Who was the 29th president of the United States? Google it.

What does chlorophyll do? Google it.

How do you do I find the exact value of tan (s + t) given that sin s = 1/4, with s in quadrant 2, and sin t = -1/2, with t in quadrant 4?

WTF is that?

Google, tan. Google, sin. Google, exact value. Google, trigonometry and quadrants. Google, Kahn Academy and watch videos on trigonometry. Aaaaaannnnnnd done. Thank you very much Mr. Google.

See?

What the hell do you need textbooks for?

In fact, if we are trying to get our students to be more prepared for the real world, wouldn’t we want them to have the ability to find formulas and solutions on their own anyways? How many text books do you have at work? I would put my money on one. It is a general, literal explanation of your job, and it does you little more than no good because your job involves so much more than anything they could ever write in a textbook. Sort of like real textbooks. What a kawinki-dink!

So what do you do?

You search, you research, you talk to people, you get answers, and you solve the problem.

Why not start that with 9th graders?

Not only do they do it anyways (mostly looking up stupid s***, scanning Pinterest, Snapchat, etc.), but they need to know how to do it to be successful in life.

The earlier they are practicing (deliberately) the better, right? So when they get older and their boss needs a spread sheet, or a power point, or whatever crap they need for work, the employee can say, “got it.” Then run back to their office and figure out how in the hell to do it, just like we all do.

To be honest, my whole job is looking up how to do things. I see a picture I like, or an effect that is new, an editing trick, or a marketing technique, and I look it up. I learn how to do it, then I apply it for my clients.

What happens even more often, just like the employee described above, a client says, “I really like this, can you do that?” What is my answer 99.99% time? Of course! Then I run home and look it up, sweating, hoping I can actually do it!

There are no text books for life.

I move that we don’t need text books in high school either.

Can teachers write problems? Yes.

Are teachers experts in their given subject matter? Yes (you hope).

So why do we need books?

In fact, if teachers have to come up with their own problems, I bet the homework load would go WAY down. It’s not as easy to give 50 geometry problems if you are writing them out yourself. I think homework is stupid anyways. I like the reverse homework strategy. Do all the work in class, and get research based homework. Learn at home, where special instruction is not needed. Just gather information for when you have a teacher to explain it to you.

Ok. So there is the practical reason.

Now for the…..

Dolla Bills Yall!

Get ready to puke, or crap your pants. Either way, do not read this section on a full stomach.

Lots of numbers here (big ones).

Here we go.

The average text book cost: $68 (I think this is low, but I will roll with it)

The average number of academic classes per student: 5 (PE, Art, sports, etc. Probably don’t have text books. Unless you have a real hard ass PE teacher. If you do, adjust the numbers in the formula below).

Here is the first part of the equation: 68 (avg. cost of books) x 5 (avg. number of academic classes) = 340

That means a text book, per academic class, per student, per year = $340.

“But wait (says the school district employee. Insert whinny, annoying voice here), we have a 7 year cycle on textbooks in California, so that number is much lower!”

Fair enough.

So let’s adjust the formula: 340 (books per year)/7 (how often they update textbooks in years) = $48.57 per year, per student.

Not bad, huh? Not even $50 per student on textbooks! Yay, budget!!

(This is the point where I normally would say, you get what you pay for, but this next section’s numbers are so high, I will refrain).

To continue…..

The current number of high school students in California (including continuation, alternative, and community schools): 1,891,060

Now, take the $48.57 (book cost per year, per student) and x by 1,891, 060

So…

$48.57 x 1,891,060 = $92,140,204.20

$92 MILLION DOLLARS!!!!

PER YEAR!!!!!

EVERY YEAR!!!!!

Have you said holy s*** yet?

I did, and I wrote it!

HOLY S***!!!!

And that is one year!!!

I already said that, didn’t I?

How much would the state be saving in a 7 year textbook cycle?

Great question.

Hold on to your hats: $644,981,429.40!!!

ALMOST $650 MILLION DOLLARS!!!!

Is there even a swear word for that?

I didn’t think so.

This is where you just stare and drool.

I’ll wait.

Wipe your face.

Savings For The Biggest School Districts In California

I am going to make this simple. I am just going to multiply the $48.57 by the number of high school students in the given school districts.

Here we go. The savings per year, for 3 of the biggest districts in California.

Los Angeles Unified: $7,407,264.99

San Diego Unified: $1,450,057.35

San Francisco Unified: $768,425.97

Keep in mind, this is per year. If we expand these out for the 7 year textbook cycle, the numbers are ridiculous.

LAUSD: $51,850,854.93

SDUSD: $10,150,401.45

SFUSD: $5,378,981.79

Think Of The Possibilities

What could your district do with all of that extra money?

More teachers? Better teachers? More programs? Better programs? Unbelievable technology for your school site? Sports programs that have been cut? Art programs? Music? Maybe you give the students a stipend to buy novels, biographies, and autobiographies to help them customize their learning. Maybe invest in tablets for them all so the books are cheaper?

Do what your kids need the most! The possibilities are endless! Think of what this could mean for your district, your community, and your city?

I know this will start small, a school or two, but I know it will grow. Why? Because all of these kids are on their damn phones all the time looking up s** they don’t know anyways. Why not take advantage of that and apply it to school?

The question almost answers itself, I know.

I can’t wait to hear about this being developed. I know it will happen. Some ideas are too good to pass up.

Good luck all you crazy ones, misfits, and rebels.

It’s time to change the world.

The Christmas Test

For those of you that do not celebrate Christmas, just replace “Christmas” with “Birthday”, and you will get the same effect.

With the holiday season in full swing, I think this is the perfect time to share my theory.

Test Origins

This actually started as The Birthday Test in 2004, not coincidentally, on my birthday. As I thought about it more, I realized it was really a two part test, Birthday & Christmas.

My epiphany that birthday?

“This birthday sucks!“

That’s it.

Tada!!

Keep it simple.

Just for the record, it wasn’t in a spoiled brat kind of a way. Even when I look back on it now, 12 years later, it really was a bad birthday, mostly because I was in a bad place. I was single after being in a relationship for 4 years with a wonderful girl who just wasn’t right for me. I had just started my first career at the cost of smothering my passion, I was in a tug-of-war between myself and what I thought myself should be, and to avoid dealing with it all I was burying it in partying.

It was not who I was. It was not who I wanted to be.

Something had to change.

(this is a whole other essay in itself, but my changes were extreme, and stupid. Why? Because I wasn’t really dealing with what I was feeling or going through, so I just covered it up with what made sense, another relationship and doubling down on my career. #dummy).

You

Have you ever had a s*** birthday?

Have you ever had a s*** Christmas (or whatever you celebrate)?

**On a side note these tests will work with anyone except Jehovah’s Witnesses. You guys don’t celebrate anything, so, I don’t know what to say. Sorry for not having a test for you?

Anyways,

If you have ever had a s** birthday or Christmas, you have already taken the test, but you didn’t know it.

The Test

Christmas and birthdays are inherently happy occasions. Singing, lights, presents, candles, etc. They are fun, colorful, celebratory, great days. At least they should be.

So if you find yourself having a bad one, consider it a test.

There is only one question: What the hell is going on?

J/K, kind of.

The question is, how do I change so this doesn’t happen again next year?

Notice I didn’t say, “How does he change? or she change?” It is, how do I change?

This all starts and ends with you. As soon as you place the blame for your unhappiness on anyone else, you lose. This is all you baby! Own it!

Your life not being right will never be more apparent than on a special day like Christmas or your birthday.

Those days should bring a smile to your face, and happiness to your heart. If they don’t, it is time to make a change.

Audit Your Life

As hard as it is to be down on one of these special days, you will need to dig deeper. What is bringing you down? How have you let it get to this point? What can you do about it?

If it is just a general depression because you don’t like getting older, get over it. We all get older. Take really good care of yourself so you aren’t falling apart in your 40s. There are easier ways to get older, you just need to choose wisely.

So, what is the problem?

Relationships? Money? Weight? Health?

What is it?

How did you get here? What stories have you been telling yourself? How have you been justifying it?

This test is a slap in the face.

It will get your attention.

But you MUST deal with it appropriately.

What does that mean? You need to DEAL with it.

I have a good friend that just broke up with her boyfriend. What does she want to do to feel better?
Get a damn cat.

I am cool with pets (I’m more of a dog person myself), but filling a void when the “void” is fresh is the LAST thing you should do. You need to deal with what you are, well, dealing with. Feel the feelings, sift through your thoughts, and deal with it.

Filling a void is never filling the void, it is just covering the hole.

You may not see it, but it’s there. Others may not see it, but it’s there. You need to get down in there, clean it out, and start rebuilding. In medicine it’s called debriding. When you have a deep wound (and that’s what this test exposes), you need to basically cut to heal. Dig out all the rotten flesh, the bacteria, the stuff that will keep you from healing 100% and flush it all out. Once it is gone, the wound will heal good as new, maybe even better.

Isn’t that what you want?

Don’t you want to take the feelings you are having right now and remove them forever?

Not cover, but recover?

This bad Christmas of yours is a gift.

It may look like a box of s***, but it’s The Christmas Test.

Not the thing you asked for but the thing you need.

Isn’t that how it always works out?

You don’t get what you want, you get what you need.

Well you have what you need.

Take the test.

Ace it.

And have a Happy Holiday.

To all of you who find yourselves searching this holiday season and New Year’s, keep going. Everything you need is out there. You find it with hard work and honesty with yourself. I am here if you have any questions, and there are authors/podcasters out there that can help you: Tim Ferriss, James Altucher, Tony Robbins, Jordan Harbinger, Brian Koppelman, Gary Vaynerchuk, Lewis Howes, and many more.

Keep pushing, keep look, keep asking questions, and keep being honest. It will all work out.

The Accidental Stoic Pt. 3 - Live A Life Of Character

(If you have already read one of the other parts, you can skip the intro. I wanted to make sure all readers had the background no matter which lesson they were starting on. Enjoy!).

I love Tim Ferriss.

I love Ryan Holiday.

When you go through something traumatic you find yourself looking for answers, grasping for knowledge.

You hate the way you feel.

You don’t know what to do yet, but you know you never want to feel this way again.

But what can you do?

You allow yourself to be teachable.

Allow yourself the opportunity to learn from your mistakes so you don’t have to relive them again.
Two of the people that I turned to were: Tim Ferriss and Ryan Holiday. They practice and preach Stoicism: the endurance of pain or hardship without a display of feelings and without complaint.
In these blogs I am going to break down 5 pillars of the philosophy (Time Is Brief, Overcome Adversity, Live A Life Of Character, Self-Awareness, and Practicing Misfortune), and explain how I became one without even knowing it. What a pleasant surprise! Nothing like having a goal and realizing you are already there!

I find the best way to allow yourself permission to be teachable is either acknowledging the desire and need to learn or finding yourself in stories about other people and applying it to your own life.

3. Live A Life Of Character:

  • Recognize the power of your gestures.
  • Do not compromise.
  • Practice: humility, honesty, and awareness.
  • Think about your thinking.
  • Learn from others’ experiences.
  • What do you spend most of your time on? Is it important?
  • Be steadfast, strong, in control, and always learning.

“Let your yes be yes, and your no be no.” (Mat. 5:37)

This one was a bitch slap right in my face ………

If Mike Tyson was the one bitch slapping me ……

In 1988.

Not 1988 me, 1988 him.

(Why would Iron Mike bitch slap and 8-year-old?)

Yeah.

Ouch.

We all think we are good people.

If we didn’t we would change, right?

What we fail to recognize is it really doesn’t matter if you are a good person, if you do bad things. Barry Bonds is the greatest hitter of all times, but if he didn’t get a hit what would he be? Exactly, a should-have-been. That’s what we do to ourselves when we don’t live a life of character. We are should-have-beens.

They are great, but.

Without character, you are a “but” head. Just imagine Biff Tannen walking around with you all day:

“What are you doing butthead?”

“You sure you want to do that butthead?”

“Are you thinking about your family butthead?

“Are you thinking about your legacy butthead?

We operate in the shadows. If people don’t see it, it doesn’t count, right? That’s a negative Ghost Rider. It counts even more, because it means you are lacking character. You are a phony. You are a fake. You present one thing, you say one thing, then you turn around and do another. You are like a famous comedian that preaches family values, goes after other comedians publicly, then gives chicks drugs and humps them. Are those family values? We have an emergency Dr. Huxtable!

If no one knows, does it count?

If a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound?

The answer is: FUCK YES IT DOES!!

You think it is all about you? If YOU didn’t see it? If YOU didn’t hear it? Whether you see it happen or not, the repercussions of a fallen tree will still be there: a shattered trunk, crushed trees around it, years of growth and stability gone, homes of little woodland creatures destroyed. Poor squirrels.
And what do you say? But I didn’t see it. Maybe it didn’t happen.

Go fuck yourself you jerk-off.

I am a good person. Really I am. I care about people. I hate when I hurt people’s feelings. I love my wife. I love my daughters. I love all my friends and family. But if a tree falls in the woods ……..
We spin the shitty situations we put ourselves in so we don’t have to feel bad.
If we held a mirror up to our actions, or if we let other people see the stupid shit we are doing, we would puke. Instead, we tell ourselves it’s not that bad. We don’t tell anyone the bullshit we are doing, and we keep doing it. Better than feeling bad, right? Why bring yourself down? That’s no fun.

Bring yourself down.

Trust me.

There is an unbelievable freedom in living a life of character. No secrets? The feeling of knowing you are doing everything the right way? Not just by your biased standards, but by those around you? Holy shit. It is amazing. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! It’s freedom. It’s freedom within the freedom. Like uber freedom!! (not the app).

We all have freedom to do pretty much whatever we want. Most people choose poorly: they eat like shit, work like shit, fill their minds with shit like bad TV, bullshit web searching, porn, treating their bodies bad, and treating their relationships bad. We have all the freedom in the world, and we shackle ourselves with the decisions we make EVERY SINGLE DAY.

There are a lot of losers out there.

You may be one of them.

Are you?

I was.

You may think I am still one, but I don’t care, because I know I’m not. Why? How? Because I live a life of character. I have no secrets, I do everything with integrity, I audit my time and my interactions with people both personally and professionally, and I am grateful for everything I have. I am cool. Joe Cool. Or Joey Cool (don’t want to piss off Snoopy).

You need to audit yourself consistently to make sure you are living a life of character. Check all the time. We are creatures of habit, creatures of conditioning. You can condition yourself right in to and right out of just about anything, good or bad. If you don’t audit, you could be going off in a direction you wouldn’t or shouldn’t. Reflection is key. Evaluate perspectives. Adjust. Tweak. Get better. Be better. Consistently.

If things in your life are not the way you want, or envisioned, audit. Audit everything! Don’t have the marriage you want? Audit yourself. Messed up kids? Audit yourself. Not enough time in the day? Audit.
Not enough money? Audit! Fix you, then you can fix IT.

You may need to really sit down and evaluate who you are. You may not know. I didn’t. My wife was the first relationship that allowed me to be me. The problem was, I didn’t know who I was. I always thought relationships were the ebb and flow of who you are to keep the peace. What if you could be 100% all the time? Holy shit. New concept. Maybe that’s why they say good relationships are easy. You can just be you. That’s seems pretty easy. But what if you don’t know who you are? What if part of you is an asshole? Then you need to fix it. Audit yourself.

Once you audit, you NEVER compromise. Let your yes be yes and your no be no. When you leave a crack in the door, it’s much easier to blow right open. If you close it all the way, it stays shut. That’s where I really messed up. My no’s ended up being maybes because I left the door slightly open. I didn’t slam it shut when I should have, and it became a yes. It slowly opens, a little wider, then a little bit more, then all of a sudden, shit, it’s open, it’s a yes. Damnit. But I’m a good person! Well, not right now you aren’t.

Actions speak louder than words.

How do you live a life of character?

I’m glad you asked.

Do what is in the best interest of you (the good you, not the selfish dickhead you), do what is best for
your family, do what is best for your friends, your company, your clients, the random person walking down the street. That’s character. That’s integrity. NEVER compromise. You will be better for it. Your loved ones will be better for it. Everything will be better! Your LIFE will be better. You can walk around with your head held high because the sunlight feels so damn good!

Shadows are cold.

Darkness is lonely.

Step out and let the rays of light warm you, energize you, and show you what the world can be, and should be.

I wish I had this knowledge 20 years ago. Instead, I learned it the hard way. You don’t have to have the same regrets I do. You can learn from my mistakes, my experiences. Change is good. Live A Life Of
Character.

Happy 18th Birthday - 20 Steps To Separate Yourself

Happy Birthday to you….

Happy Birthday TO YOU ……

Happy Biiiiiirthdaaaaaay you’re either a winner or loooooserrrrrr!!!

Happy birthday tooooooo yyyoooouuuuu!!!!

You are an adult now.

Congratulations.

Still feel like a kid? Of course you do, but you aren’t. And you don’t have to act like it.

Today is decision day.

Decision 2016, or 2017, or whenever you read this.

This is your Independence Day. The day you seize independence from…… yourself.

How much longer will you play the “kid” card?

What’s wrong? Adults aren’t fun?

You can still hang out.

You can still have friends.

You can still be fun.

If you are a lame adult, you were probably a lame kid too.
You can be anything you want to be, but if you want to excel you need to decide when to cut out all the bullshit. Trim the fat. Solidify your goals. Focus on the long game. Work with grit. Move with determination.

“Why do I have to grow up so fast?”

“What’s wrong with having fun?”

“You are only young once.”

Wwwwaaaaa, wwwaaaaaaaaa.

Are these things you say to yourself? You want to wait until you are 22 and done with college, or 23, or 24? Go ahead.

I am not here to tell you there is anything wrong with that. But if you want to dominate, if you want to crush it, be the top 10% of the top 10%, you need to act like an adult starting…..yesterday.
I am not telling you there is anything wrong with being “young,” or being just like everyone else. But if you want to win, you shouldn’t want to be like everyone else. You should want to be a superstar. You should want to stand out. It’s hard to be a superstar when you surround yourself with “everyone else.” Weekends start on Thursdays. Detoxing Sunday night. Groggy on Monday. Waiting for the weekend by Tuesday. Skipping class, skipping work, work is for work hours, etc. That’s not how you do it. It’s fun, but it’s not how you do it. That’s not how you become great.

You want to be great don’t you?

You think you can accomplish greatness, don’t you?

You have to think it before you can do it.

You can start doing both of those things now.

Take it from someone who didn’t get it. Who didn’t realize the power you have with the proper mindset.
The power you have with your age. The power of separating strong and early. You could be ahead of
EVERYONE if you started today. If you start separating on your 18th birthday, you will leave everyone behind. No one will be able to accomplish what you can accomplish. You will be 7-8 years ahead of every single one of your friends. What do you need to do? Cut the bullshit. Trim the fat. Be goal oriented. Live with focus, grit, and determination. Lose the dead weight and move on. Shed your skin, spread your wings. Pick the analogy and go.

From this day forward, it’s ALL up to you.

Not up to the college you go to.

Not up to the company that hires you.

Not up to your mommy and daddy, your boyfriend or girlfriend.

You, and only you.

To be honest, you don’t need to be 18 to cut the bullshit. The sooner the better. Your 18th birthday seems to be a good one because the government says you are now old enough to die. Pleasant, huh?

I know what you are thinking, “But I don’t want to miss anything.” You have to trust me when I tell you that you aren’t going to miss shit. When your parents tell you nothing good happens after midnight, they are right. It sounds crazy, but they are. Puking at 4am? Banging an ugly girl you would never be interested in in a million years? Banging a dude you wouldn’t be caught dead with? Morning after pills? Horrible hangovers? DUIs? Too many cigarettes? $2 tacos from JB? Coke (not a-cola)?  How many of those scenarios come from things that happen BEFORE 12am? Exactly.

What else will you be missing out on? Beach instead of class? Beer pong instead of studying? Is the tail wagging the dog?

You should have one goal if you want to kill it in life. That goal is: Success. That’s it.

Go to college or don’t do to college. The important thing is to act like you didn’t go. That way, you won’t expect anything to happen if you do or don’t go. People get so caught up in earning their degree, and making something of themselves, they forget to actually make something of themselves. The stuff you learn in school will transfer to 1% of anything you do for a living, so the sooner you start learning and cranking on your own, the better. The truly educated NEVER stop learning. The problem is a lot of people start learning too late. Start now.

Awwww,  you want to enjoy your youth?

What does that mean?

That sounds like you’re scared? Masked in “fun” and “youth” but really scared.

Why would you be scared?

Because the world is scary and you’re not ready.

Mommy and Daddy’s house, the dorms, the frats, the sorority houses, much easier to deal with. Why are
they easy? Because they put all the pressure on something else, not you. You are a son, a “brother” or a “sister.” You don’t have to be “Jack The Adult” or “Jill The Adult.” You put it off. “It’s not time yet.” “I have my whole life to work, I want to have fun.” But it’s really because you are overwhelmed with the notion of being responsible for your own life. Get over it, and get over it soon.

How do you start? Where do you trim the fat? Cutting the bullshit? You probably aren’t even sure what is or isn’t bullshit in your life. That’s how little thought you have put in to this. You are just on a path, obviously someone else’s, taking a stroll.

Start with a goal. Where do you want to be at 30?

Now look at all the shit you do during a given week. What is not helping you reach that goal? Now stop doing those things.

Distinguish yourself. Separate.

Which of your friends don’t have aspirations like you? Stop hanging out with them. You are the product of the 5 people you surround yourself with. If you hang out with losers…….

Do I even need to say it?

Be THE guy. Be THE girl.

Be Brady instead of Manziel.

Be Steph instead of Swaggy P.

Be Zucks.

Be Sheryl Sandberg.

Be Tim Ferriss, Ryan Holiday, Carol Dweck, Tony Robbins, or anyone else who cut the BS, started killing it, and grinding.

Be Gary Vaynerchuk instead Larry Shmandershuk.

Stand up for yourself. You are 18. You can be anything you want. ANYTHING. But you can’t sabotage yourself. You can’t sell yourself short. You can’t give up on yourself. Or worse, never start.
Give yourself every opportunity to be everything you want to be.

Be an adult. You are one now. Act like it.

Or don’t.

Life is all about choices. Tomorrow will be determined by the choices you make today, right now.
Write out everything you want to be doing when you are 30 or 40. Don’t plan for 2020, plan for 2050. Have some vision, some insight to see that far out TODAY. Attack now for later.
20 Strategies To Separate:
  1. You can go out with your friends, but come home by 12am.
  2. Have 2 drinks instead of 8, then use Uber to take you home.
  3. Don’t do heroin, or crack, or crank, or molly. Do I really need to put this? Yes. You are 18.
  4. Sleep 7-9 hours a night.
  5. Eat right, eat clean. No fast food. Cut out all the sweets.
  6. Be in class or at work on time. Be prepared. Be ready to grind.
  7. Look at everything with your name on it as an individual representation of you. What’s online? What are you putting on social media? If you don’t care about you and what you represent, no one else will either. The internet is forever, whether you like or not. Whether you think it’s fair or not. Trust me.
  8. Study hard. Work Hard. Learn when you don’t have to. Get better when no one is looking.
  9. Don’t worry about failure. It’s all learning until you quit. Your mindset and approach will determine if you are a winner or a loser. Keep winning.
  10. Be yourself. Have self-awareness. Have self-control. Have self-worth. Evaluate your outcomes, strategize accordingly.
  11. Don’t blame anyone for any situation you are in. It’s your fault, and you are the only one who can change the circumstances. Grab your shovel and start digging.
  12. Remove the things from your life that hinder your goals. It’s either a yes or a no. There is no maybe here. You know it. This includes people, environments, AND substances.
  13. Surround yourself with people smarter than you.
  14. Always be in a learning mode.
  15. Always be in a growth mode.
  16. Love yourself.
  17. Appreciate what you have. There are people more grateful than you with much less.
  18. Recognize that every day is a gift that allows you to try again, or try harder, and be better.
  19. Always be moving forward.
  20. Never give up.
Happy Birthday.
