30 Days Of Genius Blog: James Altucher

Perspective is one of the most important things in life. It changes everything. One of the most unique perspectives on life has to belong to James Altucher. He is constantly questioning, learning, reinventing, and taking everything he has experienced to help others (through brutal honesty and insight) with their own experiences. I am a huge fan of his, and was thrilled to be able to write this.
I have taken his interview on 30 Days of Genius with Chase Jarvis, extracted the information, and used it to answer common questions by readers just like you, who are looking to take their lives to the next level, or at least a different level than the one they are on.

Please enjoy.

I Am Too Scared To Quit My Job And Follow My Passion. What Do I Do?

That works out great, because you shouldn’t quit your job yet anyways. Honestly, you may not quit your job ever!

The important thing is actually doing the thing you love. Just because you don’t leave your job to pursue your passion doesn’t mean you should use that as an excuse to not pursue it at all.

Get what I am saying?

This is the greatest time ever to be anything you want. Not only are there less gatekeepers because of the internet, efficiency through technology is consuming more jobs every day. You might as well do something you love, because your job will most likely be taken by either a new program, or a robot.

Cheers!

Don’t look at it as a bad thing, because it really isn’t. What do you do with this slightly gloomy outlook on your job security? My suggestion is to write down 10 ideas a day that have to do with your “passion,” whatever that is. I do this in the morning, you can do it when it works for you, but do it. What you will find is the more ideas you have, the more you flex this idea muscle, the better the ideas get, and more frequently. Don’t worry, most of your ideas will be bad, but some will be great. This will speed up the process of getting all the bad ideas out of your head to make room for the good ones.

As you come up with actionable (hopefully good) ideas, you start implementing and experimenting. If you think of anything great that was ever invented, it is really just a series of mini experiments. It’s actually the best way to learn. Experiment, fail, learn, think, experiment, fail, learn, etc.

This is why you don’t quit your job. You need to mitigate the risk of this new endeavor. Having money come in is part of that mitigation. What you need to do is focus on your down time (nights and weekends), or the time when it looks like you are at your desk working (not that any of you do that), and create your passion project then.

The best job to do this? Night security. Why? Because no one is doing anything at night, you are the only one there, and no one is watching you because you are the one watching them. See? Perfect!
The keys are action and repetition. The more you create, the more creative you become. It’s just how it is. Bruce Lee said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” Why? Because that guy is REALLY good at that one kick. You just need to figure out your kick.

What If I Don’t Have The Equipment To Create The Way You Want To?

That’s just an excuse.

Seriously.

One of the greatest movies of all times, Star Wars, was filmed on a camera worse than the one on my phone, or your phone, or pretty much anyone else with a phone. Try and wrap your head around that.

Star Wars.

Just create.

Tech is better than it was 20 years ago. There are less gatekeepers than there were 20 years ago. There is more information out there than ever. Just create. Tell your story through the medium of your choice. Storytelling is the oldest art form in the world. For the rest of your life, and the rest of everyone’s life, you will always find media for storytelling. It’s been around for 70,000 years. It may look different. It may be on cave walls, then newspapers, then TV, now on your phones, but it’s still storytelling.

Keep your expectations low, achieve them, and then set your expectations a little higher. The goal should be creation, ideas, experimenting, and reinventing. That’s how you develop something great, something you can quit your job over.

Where Should I Start?

Advice is autobiography.

I will tell you what I do, and hopefully you can use some of it for yourself.

I believe that everything compounds. The more you do it, the better (or worse) it gets. I have 4 daily practices that I do, well, daily. They help me immensely in my personal as well as business life.

Here they are:

1. I do something for my health. This could be a walk, a run, as long as it is physical and you get your body moving.

2. I do something creative. For me, it is most likely writing, but it could be painting, singing, whatever you want. Just create.

3. I practice gratitude. Not easy gratitude, like your kids or health. Nope, difficult gratitude. Take the thing that sucked the most yesterday or today and find the goodness in it. It is not always easy, but it can do amazing things for you mentally and emotionally.

4. I do something for my relationships. This can be kids, parents, friends, anything. Do something that builds or reinforces the relationships in your life.

Figure out what you are doing when you are doing well and keep doing that. Then figure out what you are doing when you are doing bad, and figure out how you get back to the “good” faster.
Easier said than done, but remember that we all have ups and downs, the key is to figure them out and stay up as much as possible. It’s better for you and everyone around you.

Quotes

My motto is, “I’m an idiot.”

Almost by definition, you have to have a side gig.

You can constantly find media for storytelling.

You only learn through experiences. I would tell my former self, “go f** yourself.” You need to learn on your own.

Breathe Motherf***er

Tim Ferriss: “If you could put a billboard anywhere and have it say anything, what would be?”

Wim Hof: “Breathe motherf***er!” (I don’t know why I * out letters, it’s not like you don’t know what I’m saying).

And that’s where I got this title from.

The song was originally called “Breathe,” but when I got to the heavy part in the middle, it just fit too well to not use it.

It is the perfect title for this song, and technically, The Wim Hof Method is exactly what this song is all about:

Breathing.

Good ‘Ol O2

The basic idea around the Wim Hof Method is to get the carbon dioxide out of your system, to allow for more oxygen in your system.

How do you do it? By breathing. His technique, specifically, is 30 deep breaths in a session.

The benefits are:

1. Boosted energy levels.
2. Lowered stress levels
3. Strengthening your immune system
4. Faster recovery
5. Improved focus and concentration
6. Improved sleep
7. Mood enhancement
8. Improved circulation

So why would anyone tell anyone else to “breathe mother***er”? Because no matter what you are going through, you have to remember to breathe. All of those benefits happen when you bring in oxygen and release the carbon dioxide. Doing that calms you, refocuses you, allows you to assess the situation with a clear(er) mind, and hopefully deal with the situation in a healthier, more beneficial way.

It helps you deal with……

Bad Days & Bad People

The first step in a solution to everything.

Bad day? Breathe.

Stressed? Breathe.

Assholes? Breathe.

Argument? Breathe.

“It is nothing you can’t handle.”

It is so difficult, in the heat of the moment, or the midst of the crisis, to recognize the fact that you have been in similar situations and made it out ok. Taking a breath gives you a tiny window of reflection to remember that. Does that make your current situation any less difficult? Of course not. It’s called a crisis for a reason. But you made it through before. In fact, you have always made it through. Even when it felt like you were never going to make it through you did it, against the odds, and against your expectations. If you hadn’t you wouldn’t be here today.

This time is no different.

The Power You Give It

If we are honest with ourselves, we can admit that no one makes us feel sadness, anger, fear, or sorrow.

We allow them to. We give them the power.

People are going to do what they are going to do, it is up to you to allow it to affect you or not.

They can push you, pull you, try to tear you down, but you don’t have to let them. You can use all of your strength to ward off their attacks.

It starts with breathing.

In with the good, out with the bad.

You know, hippie stuff.

This song is a reminder from you for you (FYFY). Don’t forget that you are the one that lets negativity in, and you are the one that can keep it out. They can try relentlessly to break you down, and they do, but you never will. You have the power to block them out, to bend but not break, and to stand strong.

It could be better, it could be worse, that’s why you need to take a step back and breathe. Gain some perspective, then move on and move forward.

Breathe Motherf***er

Breathe in,
it’s nothing you cant handle, no.
And worrying won’t help it, no.

 Slow down,
take it what’s around you, now
 Everything you need is found.

Chorus

May not be what you want
But you’re never getting more
Than you can handle, no
The cracks are weakening
But you can never break me down,
Oh no

Breathe in,
You never should be feeling, alone.
You build the walls, protect your soul.

Don’t look down, you think you’re on the bottom, now?
The hills are high, but valleys low.

Chorus

Breathe mother***er

The Time Is Now

How many times have you heard this?

A billion?

I know.

Probably about as many times as you have heard, “It’s now or never.”

Don’t you hate it when you hear something over and over again only to realize that it is true?

It’s so cliché.

But so true.

*puke

I am going to teach you a word today. I am assuming I know more than you, I am assuming I know around the same amount as you, and I had to look this up.

The Word Of The Day

The word: inure
 Pronunciation: en — yoor
Definition: accustom (someone) to something, especially something unpleasant.

How?

I know what you’re thinking, why and how would you get used to something unpleasant?

Here is the how: time, repetition, frequency.

Here is the why: time, repetition, frequency.

Wait, that’s the same thing?

I know.

I am not trying to be a wise-ass, I promise.

This is the backbone of my whole article.

No matter how bad something is, or how ugly, or in the way, unsafe, unhealthy, or anything else negative, the longer it is there, the more you see it, the more you become accustomed to it, the more you get used to it.

Before you know it, it’s normal.

It is no longer bad, or ugly, etc.

It is what it is.

You are used to it.

You have become inured to it.

Now it won’t change.

Because now you don’t need it to.

Examples

I will get progressively more extreme with each one.

1. The light in the bathroom needs replacing: After a while, it’s not laziness, you have just gotten used to the bathroom being a little bit darker. What’s the big deal? I see this all the time in January and February (speaking of lights). If you don’t take your lights down by January 1st, or the first weekend in January, they will be up until Easter (and if they are up until Easter, you might as well just keep them up all year, right?). You’ve been inured.

2. That extra 20 lbs you noticed when you tried to wear your clothes from last season. You know you need to lose it. You understand what extra weight does in terms of health. You keep meaning to sign up for the gym, eat healthier, drink a little less, but you keep putting it off. Maybe you are just big boned? Maybe it is just part of getting older? You make excuses. You put it off. You buy new clothes that fit. Problem solved! Right? Then the 20 lbs stays there. Then it’s 25. Then it’s 30. Then it’s 50. Voila! You’re inured.

3. You never thought in a million years that he would hit you. Sure he started yelling at you and putting you down a few month in to your relationship. But hitting? No way. Instead of leaving you rationalize it. If he is not an asshole, it must be his work stress, or money stress. Maybe it’s me? Then it happens again. And again. You learn to cover it up, deal with it. You don’t like it, but you get used to it. You just need to learn how to navigate around him when he is in a bad mood, or drunk, or high. No big deal. Now you are in an abusive relationship. You have become a battered wife. You have become the headlines in the news, a victim. How did this happen? You became inured.

We Do This All The Time

This is nothing new.

In fact, with it being political season, I think the race is a great example.

We got used to Trump.

We have seen him constantly for 30 years. That brash, egotistical, ass that we saw 30 years ago has
somehow become a beacon of light for a YUGE number of Americans.

How in the hell did that happen?

It has gotten to a point that “Donald being Donald” gives him the freedom to say some of the craziest s*** I have ever heard from a “serious” politician and people are okay with it.

He is bringing mass deportation (impossible), building walls (impossible and stupid, not sure which is more), blocking religious groups (racist, bigoted, etc.), grabbing pussies (crime), and insinuating that polls are rigged and that the second amendment should be used on those who oppose him (inciting a riot, suggesting murder, creating divisions).

We are okay with that. It is not shocking anymore.

Trump is the best example of our ability to inure.

We got used to him. Now he may be our president.

Think about that.

The Time Is Now

Why is the time now?

Why is it now or never?

Because of our ability to inure.

Humans are amazing. We are resilient. Our ability to adjust and adapt is unparalleled on this planet.

But what if we are adjusting and adapting when we should be turning around? When we should be going the other way, or another direction at least?

But we don’t.

If we let it happen once we are opening the door for it happening twice, then three times, then four.

Pretty soon, it just is what it is.

Inured.

We got used to it.

We don’t notice it any more.

It is right in front of us and we can’t even see it for what it is.

Get Action

Sit down right now. Make a list of everything you have been meaning to do and haven’t gotten around to. Now take one step, today, to do one thing, for each of those things. Build up some momentum and “get action.” Start doing right now. You will get used to it if you don’t. You have gotten used to it up to this point. Break the cycle and get action.

It may be big.

It may be small.

But the time is now.

Why I Fast

Today I am starting my fourth 5-day water fast of 2016.

Once a quarter for the year.

The main reason I do it is for health, but there are many others.

Health Benefits

It helps regenerate the immune system, promotes longevity by reducing degenerative conditions, allows the body to thoroughly “clean” its cells, and it is a cancer fighter.

Cancer fighter?

Yup.

I hate to say it, but we all have cancer cells in us, slowly growing from year to year, waiting for the right conditions to potentially ruin our lives.

The good news is, just like everything else, cancer needs a fuel source to survive in our bodies.

Fasting restricts a major fuel source for cancer, sugar. Without that fuel source, those cancerous cells, and all of the tiny tumors in our body, shrivel up and die.

Sounds like a great preventative measure to me!

Hungry for a few days to help prevent cancer later in life?

Sold!

Cancer is a mother f***er.

In case you are wondering, I understand that I still may get it, but at least I will know I did everything to prevent it. There is peace of mind in leaving it all out on the field.

I don’t understand the mentality of people that say, “well, I’m gonna die from something!” and then proceed to treat their body like dog poop. Makes no sense to me. Life is difficult, aging is going to be hard for everyone. Why wouldn’t you give yourself the best opportunity to thrive? Be very wary of people that don’t care enough to try. You only get one life. This is not a dress rehearsal. Act accordingly.

Other Benefits

1. Time

So much glorious time!

I don’t work out during fasting weeks. I do a lot of stretching, foam rolling, and dog walking (my dog loves fasting weeks). I don’t get the boost of energy I hear some people getting after the first three days. I feel weak, I feel light-headed when I stand up, so I don’t want to push it. If I did anything, it would be light weights, minor calisthenics, but not much more.

Working out time:

4 runs.

60ish minutes per.
20 minutes of total drive time per.
20 minutes of dressing, undressing, showers, etc. per.
 = 6.75 hours

5 lifting sessions

80ish minutes per.
20 minutes of dressing, undressing, showers, etc. per.
15 minutes of smoothie making/eating per.
= ~ 9 hours

Food Prep + eating time:

~ 20 minutes of prep/eating for breakfast + lunch.
(I still need to make dinner for my wife and daughter, so that doesn’t count).
+ the time it takes to get back in to whatever project I was working on after I have been up making food and eating. I will say at least 15 minutes per meal, not including snacks, = 45 min per day.
= ~ 7 hours

Total Time Saved: ~22.75 hours in 5 days!!

That is 2 full work days saved in just 5 days.

Think about the productivity!

I can get so much done, it’s unbelievable.

Granted, there is a little brain fog later on in the week, but I have an enormous amount of time to work!

I can get so much done!!!

2. Mental strength

How many of us let our stomachs lead us throughout the day? I’m hungry, my blood sugar is low, I need nourishment, blah blah blah. Once you realize you don’t need to listen to your stomach you can take even more control of your day. You can skip lunch and power through because you have tested yourself already. You are a trooper. You don’t really need it, you have just conditioned yourself to think you need it.

It also shows you that you eat when you aren’t hungry at all (which is where most of us pick up the extra pounds). This helps you distinguish between real hunger and eating when you are supposed to (12 for lunch, 6 for dinner, etc) or eating because you are bored.

3. Religious strength

Fasting is a major component in all of the major religions. In fact, I thought fasting was only for religious reasons when I was younger. It sounded crazy to me. As I got older and learned all of the health benefits, it made me appreciate the religious factors even more. Rejuvenating the body? Building the immune system? Reducing cancer risks? And slowing the degenerative aging process? It’s incredible. Scriptures were written thousands of years ago, before modern science, before labs, before anything we would call credible by today’s standards, and here is this gem at the heart of many scriptures, fasting. I think it’s amazing, but that may just be me (which I am okay with).

Living Blog (10/24/16–10/28/16)

I will be editing this blog throughout the week, updating how I am feeling, what is difficult, what is easy, etc.

Please follow along this journey of mine, and ask any questions you like.

Have a great week.

Facebook

40 Hour Check-In

Didn’t start getting hungry until about 10:30am on day 1. I do intermittent fasting periodically, so it is no big deal up to this point. In fact, I don’t expect it to be much of a deal at all. I have done this before, many times for 24 hours, so I am used to it.

One thing that I always forget about fasting is being cold. Because your body is not working hard on digesting food, or recovering from workouts, it is colder than I am used to. What is funny is, my wife is always the cold one and I am always looking at her like she is crazy because I am hot and she is sitting there with a blanket. Last night, our roles were reversed.

The first issue I had was dinner. I do all the cooking so I am looking at this beautiful stovetop of freshly made raviolis and homemade tomato sauce, it smells amazing, I know it tastes amazing because of the looks on my wife and daughter’s faces. Ugh. I am hungry.

Still sleeping well. I expect it to get worse the longer I am fasting. This should be my hardest day. Between 48–72 hours, when your body is most likely transitioning in to ketosis is the hardest.
Headaches, body aches, still hungry, feeling a little weak, etc. By the time I hit the 72 hours mark (noon on Wednesday 10/26) I should be good. Then I will have 48 hours of solid ketosis to go in and reset my system, shrink cancer cells, and detox my body.

There is one little hack I started doing this fast that I have not done the others. Granted, it is putting something in to my system other than water, but it is nothing too significant. On the first and second morning I drink a glass of water (duh) with baking soda and lime juice. In my mind, part of detoxing is getting all of the “crap” (pun intended) out of my system so it can heal. Well if I am not eating, then what is going to move all the waste out of my system, especially by day 2? The baking soda and lime help pull water in to the upper intestines where food may still be waiting to pass, activates that region, then helps flush it out (in to the toilet in case that was not clear). It is a little cheat, but I think it will help in the long run. Just wanted to be clear about everything I am doing so you may have a reference for your potential fast.

67 Hour Check-In

Sleep last night was rough.

I feel weak and mentally out of it.

Drinking a ton of water during the day seems to help, but you can’t do that at night. I had to curtail my water intake a few hours before I went to bed to make sure I didn’t pee all over myself or have to get up 20 times during the night.

Not good sleep.

I can feel my heart beat all night, which is not very comforting. I took my HRV (heart rate variability) yesterday morning. It was low (6) and my resting heart rate was about 10 beats faster than normal.

When I got up this morning both were back to normal, which was comforting.

Honesty, I almost got up and ended the fast last night multiple times. If I feel the same way tonight that I did last night I will call it quits. It doesn’t feel right, and I don’t want to take any chances.
I have done this before and felt better, I am not sure what the difference would be this time.
If I do bow out, I think it is important for you all to understand how vitally important it is to come off of a fast slowly. I mean really slow. This is something that I have not done well the last three times. Once I start eating, everything tastes so fricken good, I eat WAY more than I should. Keep in mind, I get full very easily because my system has been shut down for almost a week, so I am not eating a ton of food, but definitely more than I should.

This time I will be coming off of it with a cup of bone broth, some juice, and then easily digestible fruits and carbs. A little white rice, or some pasta. Things that are higher in carbs but easy on the digestive system.

Remember, you entire digestive system has been turned off, meaning it can’t process anything initially. You need to warm the engine back up. Whatever you shove in your face at the end of this will just sit in your gut. Be cognizant of that.

Another check in at 90ish hours.

Update

I failed.

I had to pull the chord at about 73 hours.

I was having palpitations and tried to offset it with some calcium, Vit D3, and magnesium, but it didn’t feel much better.

Not sure what happened. I have done this before and this may have been my worst experience.
In spite of my frustration, I do feel very good. I just wish I had gotten to remain in ketosis for the 48 hours I was planning on. There are many benefits to a 72 hours fast, but I was really looking for the full 120.

I may mix it up a little next time, start the supplements earlier, maybe add some exogenous ketones in the beginning the ease the transition.

I also may need to come to the reality that my palpitations and arrhythmia will limit my fasting the same way it limits my running. I have done the full scope of tests with a cardiologist, knowing that I will need an ablation, but without being able to catch the arrhythmia on a monitor, and not having anything visibly wrong with my heart in other tests, I just have to deal with it.

If you are a practitioner of fasting and have any suggestions I would love to hear them. Please don’t hesitate in contacting me. The more feedback and insight the better.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Be healthy!

30 Days Of Genius Blog: Kelly Starrett

There has never been a time when humans were more focused on their bodies. Muscles, tissues, the brain, recovery, etc. We are breaking it down and focusing on it like never before. Just like everything else, understanding the basics is the foundation to a healthy body. Small knowledge leads to large knowledge the same way small problems lead to big problems. Understand the micro of your body, to get it producing at the macro.

I have taken his interview on 30 Days of Genius with Chase Jarvis, extracted the information, and used it to answer common questions by readers just like you, who are looking to take their lives to the next level, or at least a different level than the one they are on.

Please enjoy.

What Does My Body Have To Do With “Big C” Creativity?

One word: EVERYTHING

It’s all connected.

Your body tells your brain what to think.

Smile, you will feel happier.

Slouch in your seat all day at work. When do you slouch normally? When you are sad, or depressed, or feeling vulnerable. When you sit like that all day at work, you are telling your brain you are sad, which means your brain starts thinking sad. You breathe differently, and your body works differently.
Sad people store fat more, and are unhealthier. And that all can start with your posture! Think about that!

It’s all reciprocal. Your body and mind are a team. They talk to each other.

Standing tells your brain that you need to focus, pay attention, because things going on are important.

How do you work all day? Are you sitting or standing?

Do you have a tough time getting through the day? Might want to try standing.

Is Sitting Really That Bad?

I’ll put it this way, it’s more dangerous than bears.

That sounds funny, but it’s true, at least by the numbers.

People lose sight of the fact that we are physical machines. Our bodies are a work of art. We just finished the Olympics in Rio. All of those movements, from swimming to gymnastics, long distance running to weightlifting, all of those are using our full range of motion. Basically speaking, our bodies are supposed to do those things! Think about that as you knees creak getting up from the couch, and you can’t get your arms above your head to get the cookies off the top shelf. (by the way, pain is not normal. Don’t trick yourself in to thinking it is your age. It is because you are not treating your body right).

This all comes from a sedentary lifestyle. We need to move more. In fact, when we are not moving, we are not being who we are supposed to be.

Sitting is the new smoking.

We need to intentionally move more, and intentionally take care of this “machine” that we have.

From sleep to stress, posture to tissue work, we need to take care of ourselves. Our bodies are an amazing gift that gives back to us the better we take care of it.

How Do I Take Better Care Of My Body?

Move more. What else can you do? Take the stairs? Walk to the store? When can you work in more movement?

Here is a fun little fact, non-exercise movement actually burns more calories than exercise. Those little step counting gadgets don’t seem so lame now do they?

Find 10 things you can do to be more active each day than you are right now.

You will feel better and be healthier the more you move. Your lymphatic system, a major defense in your immune system, needs the muscles to move in order to pump blood through them. They are not a part of the cardiovascular system. Ever notice that your more active friends don’t get as sick as much? That’s why!

Make your environment work for you. Don’t make it easy. Throw away the chair at your desk. If there is not chair, you have to stand!

A lot of this is more about undoing a lot of bad habits than gaining good ones. You conditioned yourself to be sedentary, you need to undo that.

Eat healthy.

Sleep well. I don’t mean take Ambien, Benadryl, alcohol, or smoking weed to go to bed. I mean real, naturally good sleep. Cold room, blackout curtains, no phones in the room, only clocks with red lights, limiting caffeine after noon, using eye masks and earplugs. That kind of sleep.

Notice where you are stressed and fix it. Stress is like carrying around a 50lb backpack. You may be able to handle it, but it is still weighing you down.

The Benefits To Health

You can focus more, pay better attention, your productivity will go up, you will feel better which means you will feel better, you will perform better, and best of all, it’s free.

Just remember that little problems lead to big problems. Feet, ankles, knees, hips, and back are all connected. Issues in any of those areas can lead to issues in all of those areas.

Use foam rollers, volleyballs, or anything else you can find. Move it around your body. Roll around on it. Wherever it hurts, that’s where you need work. Pain to compression is not normal. Give yourself little massages every day, loosen your body up feel better.

Quotes

“If we don’t move, we aren’t being who were are supposed to be.”

“Practice should become the standard.”

“Intentionally move more.”

Sugar Is A Ninja

What if I told you Bruce Lee’s middle name was Sara?

I would be lying, but it would be funny.

Sugar is a sneaky mother***er.

Sugar is a ninja.

You are never safe. You need to be watching your back at all times. It lurks in the shadows, it infiltrates from the inside out, and you never see it coming.

Bruce (Sara) Lee

Cobra Kai Johnny

And sure enough, Sho’Nuff.

Masters of deception. Masters of manipulation. Striking without ever being seen.

Ninjas.

Sugar is a ninja.

Hell, sugar is THE ninja.

Hiding In Plain Site

As much as sugar is a ninja, I am an assassin. I am going to show you how to snipe the sugar from a distance. See it coming and react before it gets to you. Think of me like Chris Kyle. I have the record for sugar kills.

To make it easy, I will give you the places you are consuming sugar the most without even knowing it (ninja tactics). I am leaving out bread, pasta, rice, etc. If you don’t know sugar is in there, I don’t know if you are safe from the sugar ninja at all.

Here are the hiding spots:

Cereal
Yogurt
Granola/snack bars
Juice

Artificial Sweeteners

Wait? Did you say artificial sweeteners? Those are sugar? No, but you will see how they may be even worse for you than actual sugar (which is NOT an excuse to just eat sugar. I know what you are trying to do, stop justifying, please).

Fat

Sugar makes you fat. If you are fatter than you want to be, there is a 99.99% chance that it is because of sugar. You eat too much of it. If you are burning sugar you are not able to burn fat, on top of the fact that each sugar calorie that is not burned will eventually be stored as fat.

Sugar = fat. Remember that.

Each gram of sugar is about 4 calories. If you are eating a bowl of cereal, a yogurt, granola/snack bar, a glass of juice, or fruit before work, then sitting, how many calories do you think you are burning?

Right. Not many. That sugar is not only keeping you from burning fat, it will eventually become fat.

Sugar = fat.

Alternatives for breakfast: 1. Eggs. Hard-boiled if you are in a hurry. Make them all on Sunday so they are ready to grab during the week. Your neighbors in the office will hate you, but you will be healthy, so screw them. 2. Plain, Greek yogurt, with some blueberries. There will be no sugar in the yogurt, and blueberries have a very low sugar content. 3. No juice. Water is boring, but so much better for you. Coffee is fine, but do NOT add sugar, even artificial sweeteners (section on that later).

You should not be eating close to your bed time anyways, so ideally, by the time you wake up, your body is close to, if not already, in fat burning mode. By not consuming sugar, you will be burning fat while you work! How great is that!! When your body does not have sugar as a fuel source, it switches to fat. No gym, no Stairmaster, no kettle bells, just chillin, burning fat. Hooray!

Avoid sandwiches for lunch. Salads are great, but watch the dressing (sugar, sugar substitutes). The best thing you can do for a salad dressing is use olive oil, salt and pepper. Toss in all the vegetables you want. Lentils, walnuts, avocados are great additions for protein as well. Go nuts, as long as you go healthy.

Are we comfortable with all this?

Focus on grass fed meats, wild fish, tons of veggies (I make huge smoothies and just dump them all in there. If you want the recipe, hit me up on the socials — links at the bottom).

One thing to be cognizant of when you eat out is to check and see if they use olive oil. Most restaurants use vegetable or canola oils when they cook. So you may be getting something inherently healthy like chicken or fish, but if it is cooked in canola oil, it is going to irritate your system and you won’t be digesting the food well, yada yada yada. Just something to keep in mind.

Artificial Sweeteners

Here is the king of all ninjas.

To put it plainly, fake sugar will f*** you up.

Direct enough for you?

Good.

Basically, fake sugar tricks your body in to thinking it is getting sugar, so you spike your dopamine and leptin, but never supply the sugar that your body thinks it is getting, and it creates cravings for the carbs you never gave it.

Make sense?

It also spikes your insulin. What does that do? Remember when you were younger and you had to clean your room? What did you do? You took all your crap and threw it in the closet. Viola! Room is clean!! That’s what insulin does (basically) to your system. Everything you ate gets absorbed. It doesn’t disperse it correctly in your system, it just throws it all in the closet. All done!

Sweet taste + no calories = insulin spikes and cravings = no bueno

Oh yeah!

It gets worse!

It damages your gut flora. You know, the good bacteria in your gut that allows you to process food correctly, distribute it to where it needs to go, absorb the good, get rid of the bad? Basically, everything your gut does. It hijacks that.

I told you it’s a ninja.

What happens when you don’t digest your food correctly? You don’t release vital chemicals because your system is all messed up, which can lead to depression, inflammation which effects joints, organs, etc. Think of it like a stick shift, you are revving your RPMs to 5 and 6k, when you should be shifting at 2500. Over time, you wear out. Breaking down the good bacteria also means things are left in your system that can lead to auto-immune diseases, allergies, etc.

It’s bad.

Real bad.

People don’t realize that a major center for dopamine release is in your gut. If your gut is not functioning correctly, you don’t get that release of dopamine when you should. That can lead to depression, which can lead to low self-esteem, not caring, and eating more poo poo.

Don’t eat poo!!

Make sure you don’t take that last statement out of context. Not a good look. And not very helpful as

I am sure most of you are not poo eaters. My dog is, but I hope you are not.
