30 Days Of Genius Blog: Kevin Kelly

He is the co-founder of Wired magazine, a best-selling author, and seems to have his pulse on the heartbeat of technology for over 25 years. He shares his philosophies on technology and how you can stay cutting edge in this ever-evolving world.

I have taken his interview on 30 Days of Genius with Chase Jarvis, extracted the information, and used it to answer common questions by readers just like you, who are looking to take their lives to the next level, or at least a different level than the one they are on.

Please enjoy.

Do I Have To Adopt New Technology?

That depends. Do you want to have more choices? Do you want to increase the possibilities of this world and its inhabitants? Do you want to do things that have never been done, with people you would have never met otherwise, in a way you never thought possible?

Those are personal questions. For me? I say absolutely yes, you need to adopt new technology. You have to.

Does technology create problems? Absolutely.

But there is a catch.

The way I look at it, today’s tech makes tomorrow’s problems. Sound a little depressing? It is, except for the fact that new technology will solve all of those problems. We will be better on the other end of it, with a new set of problems, but with new technology just around the corner to solve them.
The scary, fascinating, wonderful, and amazing part of technology and it’s ever changing nature is that the problems of “tomorrow” may be solved, literally, tomorrow. We aren’t talking months and years like the past, we are talking about days and hours. Without the “bad” you never would get to the “good.”

A little scary? Sure, sometimes.

But the only way to maximize the potential of technology is to keep creating, keep innovating, changing, failing, adjusting, practicing, and finally, succeeding. It is all about deliberate practice. You are legitimately trying to fail in order to figure out weaknesses and problems. It is “failing forward,” as Derek Sivers puts it.

What Do You View As The Main Benefit To Technology?

New technologies allow for genius to shine.

Think about it.

Lives change because of new technology, right? We can all agree on that. But the new technology allows for things to be possible that weren’t possible before that new technology. That may sound too obvious, so think of it in terms of music:

What if Mozart were 100 years older?

What if the Beatles formed in the 1990’s?

What if Metallica started in the 1940s?

They would have been too soon, or too late, and the world would have missed out on their genius.

No Mozart? No Beatles? No Metallica?

Where would music be today?

If there was no YouTube, how many stars would we be missing today? The Beebs? Nope. No
YouTube!

It has never been easier to get your work out there. It doesn’t matter what your area of expertise is, you can find people all over the world to share it with. 50 years ago? You would just be sitting in your house, being an expert all by yourself.

How many companies started in a garage in the 70s and 80s? Now the garage is the entire world (at least those connected to the internet).

That is a wonderful thing.

What Is The Future Of Tech, and How Can I Utilize It?

Our brains are going to be more valuable than ever. Critical thinking. Critical questioning. Creativity. Those three things will be more important than ever because the jobs that require efficiency: cashiers, assembly line workers, even drivers (in the near future), will be done by robots. Humans will be doing jobs that are wasteful and inefficient, like thinking and creating. The “new work” will not be measured in productivity. We will be left with jobs and tasks that are more opened ended.
To put it plainly, answers will be worth nothing, but questions will be worth everything.

Google can practically answer any question you have today. That will become more and more true as time passes and the “question answering” technology advances. But the questions themselves? Digging deeper? That’s where the money will be.

Collaboration is going to be the next big thing for the creative community. We love the idea of the lone creative genius, but that is rarely the reality. Adding other ways to meet and collaborate, not just face to face, is going to be enormous moving forward.

Tech is additive. Increasing choices and possibilities. It increasingly allows people to work on something together that they could never do before.

How do you utilize it?

Experience it. Try it out. Play with it. Figure it out, then put yourself in it.

You will never be able to successfully adopt new technology unless you play with it and learn it for yourself. You can pay someone to do it, but it will never capture the essence of you without your direct knowledge and application.

The big thing now? VR. Play with some goggles, check out some 360 cameras. How can you use them?

The earlier you adopt them the less crowded the market space is. That new technology could be the one that takes your career to the next level.

But you have to try.

Be quick to try, quick to drop, and slow to adopt. Find the things that work for you. Find the ways that work for you. Try everything, then adopt. You need to be very selective in what you ultimately choose.

Quotes

“We tend to over-estimate the effects of technology in the short term and underestimate the effects in the long term.”

“Disruptions always come from the outside. If you want to be successful and stay successful, you need to keep an eye out on what is going on around you, and look for the inroads.”

Generation Why Not?

Access in America has never been more readily available than it is right now.

You can pretty much do whatever you want whenever you want it.

Write a book?

Make a movie?

Be a photographer?

Singer-songwriter?

Start a business?

Whatever!

Can you think of any legitimate obstacle to doing any of those things that doesn’t make you sound like a total puss?

I sort of lead you to the answer no, but you would have gotten there anyways, I am sure of it.

Some of you are naysayers. You will come up with some totally rare or over exaggerated scenario as to why someone, somewhere, wouldn’t be able to do it, but I am talking in generalities. If you are reading this at all, you either have a phone or computer, or access to one, which means you can do it too.

All of the information you need is at your fingertips, and all the tools you need to create just about anything you want to do is also at said fingertips. Even better, it’s in the same place you got the information from.

Your phone, computer or tablet.

Can you feel the excuses slipping away from you? I hope so.

The Why Generation

I think this the wrong name.

It generates a feeling that they don’t care.

Why should I do this? Why should I do that?

What is really happening is they are, or will be asking, why not?

Why can’t I do this?

Why can’t I do that?

Why do we have to do it that way?

Why can’t we try something different?

It’s not The Why Generation.

It’s The Why Not Generation.

The Fault In Their Stars

The issues that they will face will be the same ones that each of us are facing in this ever-expanding, ever-informing, atom bomb of access to everything you could ever want access to, and all of those things having access to you: self slavery.

We can eat anything we want.

We can read, watch, and consume anything we want.

What have we done with that freedom?

We are fatter than ever, more diabetes than ever, more dependent on the government than ever, and taking less responsibility than ever. On top of all this mess, there is a YUGE population in America that think Donald Trump is the answer to their perceived problems with the economy, their jobs, and their government.

Mr. Grab Them In The Pussy himself.

We are idiots.

Collectively.

Not you, specifically.

Us.

The Longer The Rope The Tighter The Noose

This is the time in history where we need to be more self-aware than ever. More disciplined than ever. More willing to ask ourselves the tough questions and make the changes necessary to max out our potential, than ever. We are a pathetic fraction of what we could be. There is always room for improvement, but so many of us are willing to hover around the 50% (if not lower) mark.

Other questions Generation Why Not needs to ask themselves is: How can this be better? Am I doing my best? Am I putting in the work? Am I in this for the right reasons? Is this the job for me? What are my strengths? (and more importantly) what are my weaknesses? And many, many more.

If they don’t ask themselves those questions, the rope will just get tighter and tighter. They will put themselves in situations they shouldn’t be in, with people they shouldn’t be in them with, and it could prove disastrous.

Don’t just be the “why?” generation.

Be the: Why not? How? When? Where? Which? Who? Generation.

We go as you go.

We are tomorrow as you are today.

Why not?

What Is The Impact Of Instagram Stories?

People are s***ting their pants over the new Instagram stories.

But there are only two groups that really count:

1. Instagrammers

2. Snapchatters

That’s it.

This move by Instagram, obviously in response to the explosion of Snapchat the first half of 2016, is a game changer.

Is it the end of Snapchat?

No chance.

Is it a huge boost to Instagram and it’s users?

Absolutely.

Did They Copy Snapchat?

Yes and no.

The truth is, we don’t know yet.

One glaring difference in the two platforms are the filters. I don’t mean the lighting, I mean the dog face, and my favorite, the bee.

If Instagram develops similar filters, then yes they are copying Snapchat.

But who cares?

Winning is winning. Snapchat knows that Instagram is gunning for them. May the best man win. The market will decide who the real winners and losers are depending on where we go from here. Just recognize that we have a game now.

The Instagram Strategy

They obviously needed to stop the bleeding.

Numbers have been dropping for months.

Businesses were realizing the consumer interactions were much stronger on Snapchat. There has been a youth movement that may or may not revitalize Twitter even with a general lack of innovations on their part.

So where did that leave Instagram? The place with cool pictures.

Not anymore.

It just got personal.

Oh snap.

Pun intended.

Keep in mind that Snapchat’s popularity is relatively new. There is a huge group of people that still think it is the app that allows you to show your wiener and it disappears. They are uncomfortable with it. They prefer what they know: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. They are comfortable with Instagram. They were intrigued by Snapchat, but weren’t willing to bite, yet.

Now they don’t have to.

And THAT’S where Instagram wins. Customer retention. They don’t have to go anywhere and they can still partake in this new fangled “snap” culture.

Now It’s Personal

I can already see a huge upside to the stories.

The people I follow don’t necessarily give you a glimpse in to their lives through the pictures they post. They show you their art, their business, their cars, but there is nothing personal. It may be beautiful, or awesome, but there was nothing to emotionally connect to.

Now It Is Different

I can see what my favorite photographers look like, talk like, where they live, and their friends. It is changing everything. It’s huge. It is a chance to interact in a completely different way on a platform that has a huge foundation of users that are very comfortable in “their” space.

As Instagram develops and grows the “story” abilities, it will only become more fun, and more interactive, just like Snapchat, but with a built in base.

Well done Instagram.

Well done.

Baseball & Twitter Are Having A Baby!

Are you sitting down?

Are you some place safe?

Reading this blog may cause you to pass out, falling and injuring your head, and never getting the
chance to see this come to life. And it will, come, to life.

It has to.

It’s too good not to.

I, Joey, will be playing the part of the Millionaire Matchmaker. In this case, I will be playing the part of the Billionaire Match Maker.

I am working for free, and I am happy to do it.

Today, we will be attempting to combine the past and the future, in the most spectacular, life-altering way imaginable to anyone who has ever dreamed of being a Major League Baseball player.

Twitter and Major League Baseball are having a baby.

The combination of DNA is going to revolutionize sports viewing forever.

MLB? Technology? Say it ain’t so Joe(y)!

It’s so. In fact, this is what will bring all the old skool baseball fans in to the technological world for good.

I am even giving away the algorithm:

Periscope + Baseball Helmet = HOLY SHIT!!!

Just to be clear, I am not a mathematician. That is not a real algorithm. But if you didn’t know that, you are not a math person either.

I am going to make this quick then leave you to clean the mess you will inevitably leave in your pants. In layman’s terms, you are about to shit your pants.

Now that we are all on the same page, imagine this:

Dodgers v. Giants - June 11, 2016, AT&T Park (I still call it Pac Bell, but I want to be respectful)

It’s the bottom of the 7th inning.

Giants are down 1-3.

It was a clear day in San Francisco. Warm, and 79 degrees. Perfect baseball weather in front of another sold out crowd. The fact that they are playing against the hated Dodgers makes this beautiful, late-Spring Saturday even better.

The shadows have finally crept across the field, but the scoreboard still basking in the sun, boats in the cove, freighters off in the distance.

The coastal breeze is finally picking up. A few fans have even put on their sweatshirts to fight off the slight nip in the air.

You can see clear across The Bay this evening, to the city that is slowly suffocating all of it’s sports teams in to leaving (nice job Oakland, you dummies).

Kershaw has pitched a phenomenal game. Aside from a walk in the 3rd and a solo shot by Belt in the 5th, he’s been spectacular. 11 K’s in total, striking out the side in the first two innings. He’s been on fire, and the home crowd is getting restless.

But he seems to be tiring out. It is the 7th. And it is Kershaw. You either get him now, or you can count this one as an “L”.

Joe Panic starts off the bottom of the inning with opposite field single.

Then Matt Duffy squeezes a tight pitch on the inside corner in to a walk on a full count.

The Giants are in business.

Up comes the former MVP, Buster Posey. Catcher. Part-time first baseman. Toyota driver (if you believe the commercials).

This is where EVERYTHING changes my friends.

Buster has a little device in his helmet.

A camera.

And you just got a tweet on your smartphone.

Buster Posey is live on Periscope.

Holy shit.

You click the link, and you are immediately transported. Not only to San Francisco, California. Not only to Pac Bell (damnit, AT&T Park). Not only to the field, but to the batter’s box.

Did you hear me?

THE BATTER’S BOX!!!!

You see what Posey sees.

Let me say that again to make sure you are listening.

YOU. SEE. WHAT. POSEY. SEES!

Posey looks down the 3rd baseline to Roberto Kelly for the sign.

You see the sign.

You don’t know what all that hand slapping, ear tugging, crotch grabbing means, but you see it.

Swing away.

You see a sweeping view of the field as he steps in to the box.

You see him digging in to the box.

It looks like YOU are digging in to the box.

You are up to bat!

For all you porn fans this is called POV (I’ve heard, not that I know).

He looks at Kershaw.

You look at Kershaw.

He shakes off a couple pitches.

He gives the nod.

Here it comes.

Are you ready?

A slow windup and WOOSH! SLAP!

The ball looked like it fell off a damn kitchen table!!

You have never seen anything like it!

Holy shit!

A Kershaw curveball! From Buster Posey’s point of view!

Holy shit!!

Ok. Breathe deep. Hooooza.

Check the 3rd base coach.

Dig in to the box.

And wait.

And wait.

Fricken Kershaw.

Posey calls time.

You see him look at the ump.

He looks around the crowd. He’s adjusting his batting gloves. He adjusts his helmet.

You see him check the sign again.

Here we go.

Dig in.

He nods “yes.”

“This is it don’t get scared now.” – Kevin McAllister.

You use the windup, and the delivery, but it is so fast, all you see is a white blur.

But you hear a CRACK!

And you see the ball climbing higher and higher in to left-center field.

Posey is watching it.

You are watching it.

He knows it’s gone.

You know it’s gone.

Giants are up 4-3!!!

Kershaw is done for the night!

You jog around the diamond.

First, second, third, home.

You did it!!

Er, Um.

Posey did it!!

Periscope + MLB = An Experience Like This.

Make it happen.
